Question Time

Guess what, I’m writing a new book! So that means I’m looking for any means of procrastination possible  as long as I don’t actually have to leave my laptop. My online shopping has gone batshit… anyway, you asked me some questions, I’ve answered them – ta-da!

Kerrie            @Anne_Kerrie
Q. If I’m paying stupid money for American sweets (candy shops have been the fad for the last 3yrs), what should I def try?

A. Hmm. I won’t lie, US sweets are not my favourite but if you’re determined, Heath bars are pretty good, Hershey’s Cookies and Cream and I live and die by Sour Patch Kids.

Q. Which is your favourite lipstick?

A. YSL Glossy Stain in Corail Aquatique. Love it. It’s the perfect ‘My Lips But Better’ shade on me.

Abi Holligan             ‏@abiholligan
Q. Are Alex and Jenny based on someone you know/knew? I love those characters!

A. Ha! No, they aren’t but I’m very lucky, I’ve got lots of Jennys. And Louisas and Delias and Emelies and Matthews. And a couple of Sadies. And the odd Cici but the less said about her, the better.

Q. Are you happy with your life right now? Is there anywhere else you would like to live? What is your fave beauty product?

A. I’m so happy. Of course everyone has moments where the grass is always greener but I’m pretty bloody pleased with my lot right now. I can’t imagine I’d like to move anywhere else permanently but if it was an option, I’d have a place in Austin, Texas and a place in London. And preferably a best friend with a place in Paris so I could pop over whenever I wanted. Not too demanding, right?

My favourite beauty product is really, really hard to choose… Right now, it’s probably Benefit They’re Real mascara. Love that shizz.

Q. Which Marc Jacobs satchel did Angela buy?

A. Sadly it never made it through to the classic collection. They don’t make it anymore.

Q. How are you able to live in America? I read in an interview that you quit your day job so what visa are you using?

A. According to my visa, I am an alien of extraordinary ability. Basically it means I write books and people read them and I don’t take work away from lovely Americans even if it sounds like I’m Superman. I’m not.

Q. Loved the Jenny Lopez short story on kindle, any more kindle exclusives planned featuring ‘I Heart’ characters?

A. I hope so! Definitely some more ebooks to come.

Jilly Cotterill    ‏@jillycotterill
Q. What are the 5 must see/go places in NY that NYers would suggest, aside from the usual?

A. Oh god there are so many!

I live in Brooklyn so I would definitely recommend a trip over the bridge. Prospect Park is beautiful and so easy to get to. We’ve got a zoo, the beautiful botanic gardens and a pretty lake with a gorgeous lake house where I am occasionally forced to crash weddings. Just a little bit.

If you’re walking across Brooklyn Bridge, make sure to leave time to wander through Brooklyn Bridge park. In summer, there are outdoor movies, an outdoor swimming pool and even an outdoor book club! Amazing.

Every Monday I volunteer at the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. It’s part of a nationwide non-profit called 826 and everything we sell in the story goes to support the free literacy programmes and homework tutoring for children aged 6 – 18. We get a few tourists popping in and kids love it. You can get devillainized, test a cape or even have a go in the mind reader. Love it.

My favourite cocktail spot right now is Gallow Green. It’s a roof terrace in Chelsea and you have to email ahead of time to make reservations but it’s so worth it. Below the bar is an interactive theatrical experience called Sleep No More (which is mind blowing and you must go) and the bar really continues the theme – everything is very 1920s, there’s a live jazz band and they have actors wandering around chatting to guests or dancing. It’s beautiful. And the drinks are amazing.

Brunch is blatantly the most important meal in all of New York and there are so many top places for you to try. Kupersmith and Super Linda do fantastic all you can drink options if you’re meeting with the girls. I like Sarabeth’s (either by the Park or in Tribeca) for a classic option or Manatus in the West Village if you want a laid back vibe right near the important shops.

Q, Will there be another I ♥ book?

A. Angela is having some time off but there will be another one, one day.

Sage Fitzpatrick   ‏@FitzpatrickSage
Q. If you get writers block what do you do to combat it?

A. Mostly I try to write through it. If you just give up, you might never go back and then it’s just a nightmare getting started again. Even if what you write is rubbish, I think it’s best to keep going and then go back to edit later.

Jessica ‏  @imaginenydream
Q, What advice would you give a teenage writer who wants to publish a book?

A. Write! The best way to be a writer is to just write. It sounds silly but what else can you do? Read as much as you can, as many different genres as possible and just keep trying until you hit on the thing you want to write about.

Kevin Loh   ‏@ChickLitterKev
Q. How is your writing progress? Any rituals before you start writing? Or a lucky charm?

A. No rituals, no lucky charms, just two to three months without any sleep and an epic insecurity complex. Once I start, I find it really hard to stop and become a pretty difficult friend and social recluse. Happily, it doesn’t take me too long to get the first draft done!

Kevin Loh ‏  @ChickLitterKev
Q. What is your biggest inspiration in writing your books?

A. I’m inspired all the time by everything around me. Most of my big ideas come from the things me and my friends are going through so, I’ll have an idea for a hook – like the list in The Single Girl’s To-Do List – but then I try to work out what I’m trying to say with the book, what’s the point of it? I feel like we’re a generation going through a lot of changes and dealing with a lot of new life stuff, especially when it comes to relationships and friends and careers, so there’s lots for me to explore.http://0
